Kilkenny City, Ireland

June 16-18, 2003

Kilkenny offers the best surviving Irish example of a medieval town. Its walls, the splendidly restored castle, and the renowned design center housed in the castle stables draw visitors from Ireland and abroad. Kilkenny, however, is no museum. Many regard it as perhaps the most attractive large town in Ireland.

The medieval city of Kilkenny - from the Gaelic "Cill Ceannaigh"- was named after a 6th century monk called Saint Canice. His memory lives on in the beautifully preserved St. Canices' Cathedral built overlooking the city in the 13th Century.

The 20th Century saw Kilkenny's rise as a creative centre, and the city is home to many craft and design shops, including the famous Kilkenny Design Centre and Workshops located opposite Kilkenny Castle.

Kilkenny's cosmopolitan outlook influences the wide range of restuarants, from exotic world food to traditional hearty Irish fare. Kilkenny people have a deserved reputation for enjoying themselves, and Kilkenny has become a regular weekend destination (winter and summer) for those who enjoy a good night out. Music - traditional and contemporary - escapes from pubs throughout the city and resident dj's play a mix of music in the city's nightclubs.

NUI Maynooth established a campus in St. Kieran's College, Kilkenny in September 1997. The experience of the Kilkenny Campus in the past years has shown that the programmes on offer are particularly suited to the city with its rich cultural and historical heritage as well as its vibrant creative centre. In short, Kilkenny has all the ingredients necessary for a "University City".

Venue

PPPJ 2003 will take place in the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, a four-star hotel in the heart of the city. If you wish to stay in the hotel itself, you can arrange accommodation with them directly. Since the hotel is in the city center, there are many other accommodation alternatives to suit all budgets - these include hotels, guest houses and B&B's.
