Higher Diploma in Science (Computer Science)

Applicants for the course are required to hold a three-year university degree, or its equivalent, recognized by the Senate of the University with computing as one of its subjects. (Examples include BA degrees with Computing and degrees where Computing is a minor subject). In addition, students with a non-computing degree who have completed a Higher Diploma in Information Technology or equivalent are eligible to apply. (Graduates with less computing than required are recommended to apply for the Higher Diploma in Information Technology MHG54)

The Higher Diploma in Science (Computer Science) is a postgraduate course intended for graduates whose primary degree included 3-year's study of Computing. On completion of the course participants would be expected to reach a level of competence equivalent to that of a four year BSc graduate in Computer Science.

Students choose (subject to module pre-requisites) 9 modules selected from those below. In addition a project is required. Modules chosen must not have been covered at this level in a previous qualification.

• CS430 - Advanced Concepts and Issues in Computer Science 1
• CS431 - Advanced Concepts and Issues in Computer Science 2

The course brings graduates to a level equivalent to a 4-year degree in computer science and to apply for jobs intended for such graduates. Graduates will be eligible to apply for further postgraduate study including taught MSc in Computer Science and MSc/PhD by research.

Subject to availability of resources, the number of places may be limited and admission will be on a competitive basis. Information on fees, grants and scholarships can be found at the Fees and Grant Office. Fees are currently eligible for a subsidy under the HEA IT Skills programme. Duration The course is a full-time course lasting one academic year.
